Brat Flash Template: Strobing Brat Lyrics for Pop and Hyperpop

Brat Flash is the loudest member of the Brat template family. Same clustered word layout as Brat (Black Text) and Brat (White Text) — rows of two or three words, multiple lines on screen, signature fuzzy edge — but every visible word strobes between two colors at a speed you set. The default is white toggling to black on the Brat green background, 300ms per color phase, which clocks in at 1.67 flashes per second.

That number matters. WCAG 2.3.1, the accessibility standard for photosensitive seizures, kicks in at 3 flashes per second. Default Brat Flash sits well under that threshold by design. The template enforces a hard floor of 250ms per phase (4 flashes per second), and that floor is hard-coded into the animation function, not just the slider UI. You cannot push the strobe into the danger zone even by editing the saved project JSON.

Don't try to loosen that floor. Seizures are real, and the WCAG line exists for a reason.

What the Brat Flash Template Is

A 9:16 frame where:

  • Background is brat green (#8ACE00 by default).
  • Lyrics render in lowercase Arial Narrow (with Archivo Narrow fallback on Linux), 120pt, clustered in 2-3 word groups across multiple lines.
  • Words reveal one at a time with the signature brat fuzzy edge.
  • Every visible word toggles between two colors at the flash speed.
  • Defaults: white ↔ black, 300ms per color phase (1.67 Hz, safely below the 3 Hz seizure threshold).

It's the same visual DNA as the original Brat templates but with the strobe layered on top. The clustered word groups stay still; the colors do all the motion.

Genres It Hits

Brat Flash is for music with the same energy as the album it's referencing:

  • Hyperpop
  • Brat-summer pop
  • Charli XCX adjacent
  • Indie sleaze with edge
  • Dance-pop where flashing visuals fit the club energy
  • High-BPM pop (140+ BPM)
  • Anything you'd describe as "loud on purpose"

Skip it on:

  • Ballads, slow songs (the strobe contradicts the tempo)
  • Country, folk, gospel (genre mismatch)
  • Hip-hop unless it's the Drake-pop-rap lane
  • Children's content (flashing visuals are a risk)
  • Anything where you want a calm aesthetic

How to Use It

  1. Open Epitrite, new project.
  2. Upload your audio.
  3. Paste lyrics or AI transcribe.
  4. Pick Brat Flash from the template picker.
  5. Optionally change flash color A and flash color B in the Background panel.
  6. Optionally set the background color (defaults to Brat green).
  7. Adjust flash speed (the slider stops at 250ms minimum).
  8. Preview. Export 9:16.

4-6 minutes total — Brat Flash is one of the fastest templates because the only real decisions are color picks.

Color Combos That Work

The two flash colors should have high contrast against each other AND against the background. Some that work:

| Vibe | Background | Color A | Color B | |---|---|---|---| | Default brat | #8ACE00 (green) | #FFFFFF (white) | #000000 (black) | | Hot pink chaos | #FF6BA8 (pink) | #FFFFFF (white) | #000000 (black) | | Acid yellow | #F5E50A (yellow) | #FF1493 (pink) | #000000 (black) | | Black background | #000000 (black) | #FF1493 (pink) | #00FF88 (lime) | | Anti-brat | #FFFFFF (white) | #FF1493 (pink) | #0000FF (blue) | | Hyperpop | #FF3FE5 (magenta) | #00FFFF (cyan) | #FFE000 (yellow) | | Late-night | #1A1A2E (dark navy) | #FF6BA8 (pink) | #FFFFFF (white) |

Test on a phone screen before exporting. Some combos that look balanced on desktop are unreadable on mobile.

Flash Speed Settings

The flash speed (in milliseconds per color phase) controls how aggressive the strobe is. Floor is 250ms. Default is 300ms.

  • 250ms (floor, 4 Hz): absolute fastest. Hyperpop max-energy moments. Cap.
  • 280-320ms (around default): sweet spot. Feels strobing but not assaulting.
  • 400-500ms: gentler pulse. Mid-tempo pop, indie sleaze.
  • 600-800ms: barely-flashing. Almost a slow blink. Atmospheric.
  • 1000ms+: very slow toggle. More like animated color than strobe.

For 99% of use, stay between 280ms and 500ms. Below 280ms feels harsh on phones; above 500ms loses the "flash" identity.

Brat Flash vs Original Brat

When to use which:

| Use case | Pick | |---|---| | You want the green-album look exactly | Brat (Black Text) | | You want the inverted version | Brat (White Text) | | You want one word at a time, single-word reveal | Brat (Single Word) | | You want the clustered look with strobing colors | Brat Flash |

Brat Flash is the most energetic of the four. Brat (Single Word) is the most restrained.

Accessibility — Read This

WCAG 2.3.1 prohibits content from flashing more than 3 times per second when the flash covers more than 25% of the screen. Brat Flash text covers the bulk of the frame, so the 3-flash threshold applies.

What Brat Flash does:

  • Hard-codes a 250ms-per-phase floor (4 flashes per second).
  • Wait — 4 flashes per second is over 3. That's the math.

Actually the math: 250ms per color phase = 500ms for a full cycle (color A → color B → back to A). So the cycle frequency is 2 Hz, which is the rate the same color reappears. Under WCAG, that's the rate counted as "flashes per second" for general-flash detection. Two flashes per second is under the 3-flash threshold.

The default 300ms phase gives you a 1.67 Hz cycle. Comfortably under.

Even so:

  • If a viewer has photosensitive epilepsy, ANY flashing visual is a risk. Add a content warning to TikTok / Reels captions.
  • Don't use Brat Flash for content targeted at children.
  • Don't use the fastest setting for ads or paid placement; some platforms reject flashing ads.
  • If you're putting this on broadcast TV, check broadcast standards separately — they're stricter than web.

Pairing It With Other Templates

Brat Flash is loud. It pairs with:

| Combo | Why | |---|---| | Brat Flash + Brat (Single Word) | Same family, complementary energy. Brat Flash for the chorus moments, Brat Single Word for the verse | | Brat Flash + Album Art Story | Brat Flash for the social cuts, Album Art Story for the now-playing flex | | Brat Flash + Magazine Cover | Both loud. Brat Flash for video, Magazine Cover for static-style frames | | Brat Flash + Pixel Karaoke | Both retro-future. Brat Flash for the modern pop, Pixel Karaoke for the camp |

Don't pair with Home Movie, Notepad, or Country Postcard. The aesthetic distance is too far.

Common Questions

Will the strobe trigger seizures?

Default settings sit below the WCAG 2.3.1 photosensitive-seizure threshold (3 Hz general flash). The minimum 250ms-per-phase setting produces a 2 Hz cycle, which is also under threshold. That said, every flashing visual carries some risk for viewers with photosensitive epilepsy. Add content warnings on any platform that allows them.

Why can't I make the flash faster than 250ms?

The 250ms floor is hard-coded in the animation function (not just the slider UI). It exists to keep the strobe under WCAG 2.3.1 even when users edit the saved JSON. Loosening the floor requires an accessibility review.

Does Brat Flash work in 1:1 or 16:9?

Yes, both. The clustered word layout adapts to aspect ratio. 1:1 is great for Instagram feed; 16:9 works for YouTube long-form but most Brat content lives in 9:16.

Can I change the background to a video instead of solid color?

Yes. The template accepts a video background like the other Brat variants. Use a low-motion clip — the strobe is already a lot of visual activity.

Why does my text look harder to read at higher speeds?

Faster flashing forces your eyes to integrate two colors into perceived gray, which lowers effective contrast. Slow the flash to 350-400ms or pick higher-contrast colors.

Will it look different on iPhone vs Android?

Marginally. iPhone displays render high-contrast color edges slightly cleaner, so the strobe feels sharper. On older Android, it can feel softer. Test on the platform your audience uses most.

Takeaway

Brat Flash is for the loud song. Pick two high-contrast colors, stay between 280-500ms phase speed, leave the rest alone. The template handles the accessibility floor for you. Use it for the chorus, then cut to Brat (Single Word) for the verse.
