How to Pick an Epitrite Lyric Video Template by Mood (Sad, Hype, Romantic, Liminal)

The template picker organizes by genre, which is fine but not optimal. A "country" song with a sad emotional register fits a different template than a "country" song with a hype register. A "pop" hyperpop song with a hype mood fits differently than a "pop" ballad with a romantic mood.

This post is the picker organized by mood, not by genre. Eight distinct emotional registers and the templates that fit each.

The Eight Moods

| Mood | Description | Top template picks | |---|---|---| | Sad | Slow, contemplative, melancholy | Notepad, Home Movie, Retro TV | | Hype | Loud, energetic, club-coded | Brat Flash, Brat Single Word, Pixel Karaoke | | Romantic | Intimate, warm, soft | Slideshow, Country Postcard, Album Art Story | | Liminal | Empty, unsettling, ambient | Live Cams, Video Viewer, Retro TV | | Nostalgic | Vintage, memory-coded, warm | Mixtape, Home Movie, Y2K Chrome | | Aggressive | Sharp, angry, confrontational | Trap Drip, Ransom Note, Live Cams | | Editorial | Curated, fashion-coded, designed | Magazine Cover, Fashion Editorial, Bauhaus Type | | Personal | Diary-like, songwriter, raw | Notepad, Home Movie, Mixtape |

Most songs fit one or two of these clearly. A few sit between two moods — that's where mixing templates across a single release helps.

Sad

Sad isn't one thing. There are at least three sad lanes that pick different templates:

Sad-Contemplative (Phoebe Bridgers / Mitski)

Notepad is the default. Yellow legal-pad, ruled lines, intimate songwriter aesthetic. The handwritten feel reads as someone working through feelings on paper.

Home Movie is the alternate. Sepia Super-8 frame with handwritten Caveat lyrics. Reads as memory, not present-tense sadness.

Sad-Cinematic (Lana Del Rey / Father John Misty)

Retro TV is the default. Vintage CRT in a forest, brat-style lyrics on the screen. Reads as "the song is being remembered."

Magazine Cover works for the more literary sad. Editorial framing, big serif lyric, lets the lyric stand alone.

Sad-Late-Night (The Weeknd / Frank Ocean)

Live Cams with night footage. Cold, watched, alienated.

Trap Drip works if the sadness has a hip-hop register. Chrome serif on off-black, golden verse counter.

Hype

Three hype lanes:

Hype-Pop (Charli XCX / Olivia Rodrigo)

Brat Single Word for the hook. One word at a time, full screen, hard cuts. Maximum drama per word.

Brat (Black Text) for the verses. Clustered word groups, default brat energy.

Brat Flash for the chorus / bridge. Strobing color, double the activity.

Hype-Dance (Hyperpop / Club)

Brat Flash is the default. Strobing on the bright green background reads as club-coded.

Pixel Karaoke for the camp / J-pop hype. Cyan-yellow wipe karaoke screen.

Hype-Rap (Drill / Trap)

Trap Drip is the default. Chrome serif subtitle, golden verse counter, off-black bg.

Live Cams works if the hype has menace — multi-cam surveillance over high-energy rap reads as cinema.

Romantic

Romantic usually means warm, intimate, soft. Pick by how intimate the song is:

Romantic-Soft (Bedroom Pop / Indie Folk)

Slideshow with warm photo slides is the default. Italic Playfair, swipe transitions, restrained.

Country Postcard for romantic country / Americana. Cream postcard, red border, handwritten fade-in.

Romantic-Bold (Modern Pop Ballad)

Album Art Story is the default. Cover art prominent, streaming-platform layout, lyrics underneath.

Fashion Editorial for the editorial / cinematic romantic. Italic Playfair, hairline rule, big space for the lyric to land.

Romantic-Vintage (Old-Soul Love Songs)

Mixtape (cassette mixtape vibe) for the tape-coded romantic. Home Movie (Super-8) for the memory-coded romantic.

Liminal

Covered in detail in the liminal music videos guide. Quick version:

  • Live Cams + Backroomsxcore = the default
  • Retro TV with cool footage = the warmer variant
  • Video Viewer = the Y2K-digital variant

Nostalgic

Nostalgic isn't one mood — it's any positive memory mood. Pick by what kind of nostalgia:

90s Nostalgia (Cassette Tape)

Mixtape. Cassette J-card, handwritten tracklist.

70s-80s Nostalgia (Super-8 / Polaroid)

Home Movie. Super-8 frame, sprocket strips, sepia inner footage.

Early-2000s Internet Nostalgia (Y2K)

Y2K Chrome for the chrome / iridescent aesthetic. Video Viewer for the desktop / file-window aesthetic. Pinterest Feed for the mobile-app aesthetic (the most recent of the three).

Game / Arcade Nostalgia

Pixel Karaoke for the karaoke / CD+G feel. Y2K Chrome for the iridescent game-cabinet feel.

Aggressive

Aggressive needs sharp edges and high contrast. Templates that hit:

Aggressive-Rap

Trap Drip is the default. Chrome serif lower-third, golden verse counter, off-black background.

Live Cams works if the aggression is concept-coded (drill with surveillance themes).

Aggressive-Rock

Ransom Note is the default. DIY zine cut-and-paste, torn paper labels, mixed sharpie / typewriter fonts. Pop-punk, midwest emo, indie rock energy.

Bauhaus Type works for the more art-school aggression. Geometric block type, colored stamp behind text.

Aggressive-Electronic

Brat Flash. Strobing, loud, photosensitive-warning territory.

Voidglitch (if still in your version) for the broken-digital feel.

Editorial

Editorial means designed, curated, fashion-magazine adjacent. Templates that hit:

  • Magazine Cover (literally a magazine cover)
  • Fashion Editorial (italic Playfair, hairline rule)
  • Bauhaus Type (geometric, art-school)
  • Album Art Story (modern streaming aesthetic with editorial restraint)

For an EP / album release that wants to feel "designed," pick Magazine Cover for the lead single and Fashion Editorial for the deluxe / acoustic version.

Personal

Personal means diary-like, songwriter, raw. Templates that hit:

Personal-Intimate

Notepad is the default. Yellow legal pad, handwritten feel.

Home Movie is the alternate. Memory-coded personal.

Personal-Demo (Roughness as Aesthetic)

Mixtape is the default. Cassette-coded demo feel.

Notepad doubled — set with intentionally messy lyric formatting, single phrases per line, no polish.

Picking When Two Moods Apply

Some songs are both sad AND nostalgic. Both hype AND aggressive. Both romantic AND editorial. Decision tree:

  • Sad + Nostalgic → Home Movie (covers both)
  • Hype + Aggressive → Brat Flash on dark bg or Trap Drip with brighter colors
  • Romantic + Editorial → Album Art Story or Fashion Editorial
  • Liminal + Sad → Live Cams with slower swap interval, Backroomsxcore footage
  • Nostalgic + Romantic → Mixtape or Home Movie
  • Personal + Sad → Notepad

If you can't pick between two templates that both fit, ship two versions. One per template. Use one for the YouTube long-form, the other for TikTok / Reels. Lets your release campaign cover both moods.

Common Questions

What if my song fits none of these moods?

Then the song probably doesn't have a clear emotional center, which is a songwriting issue, not a template-picker issue. Sit with the song for a day. Listen with the lyric written out. The mood usually surfaces.

Can I pick by genre AND mood?

Yes, in that order. Genre narrows the templates (a country song probably isn't going to use Pixel Karaoke). Mood picks the specific one within the genre's options.

What's the safest default template if I'm unsure?

Karaoke Pro or Brat (Black Text). Both are versatile, both are free, both work on most songs.

Can I save my own template choices as a default?

Yes — via the Brand Kit feature. Save your preferred typography, colors, and animation as a Brand Kit and apply across projects.

Takeaway

Picking by genre is fine. Picking by mood usually fits better. Eight moods, two-to-three templates per mood, plus crossover combinations for songs that straddle two registers. The right template makes a lyric video feel intentional. The wrong template makes it feel generic. Match the mood before you match the genre.
